What Does It Mean To Be Male Or Female?

This past Sunday at Element Church we continued to join the conversation around faith, gender, and sexuality in our sermon series called “Grace & Truth”. There may not be a more relevant or important conversation to be having than this one. The Church not only needs to know what we believe but also how we will respond. We started the series on February 3rd saying, “If I believe the right things but respond the wrong way then what I believe won’t matter.”

In this week’s message, we talked exclusively about gender identity. We walked through some terms that are important to understand, how many people in America identify as transgender, why this conversation is so important, what we believe, and how we should respond. One of the parts of this discussion that has been so challenging to me is how the church and culture at large have not done a great job in talking about gender expression.

In our explanation of what it means to be a male or female, we have oftentimes pigeonholed this conversation or alienated a specific person because they “didn’t fit the mold.” As I said in the message, “Being a man is not all about grunts, guns, and sporting events. Just like being a woman is not all about flowers, baby dolls, and going to the bathroom together.” So what does it mean to be male or female?
