What does the truth say about me?

Have you ever read something in Scripture that you know you’ve read dozens of times, but it comes alive like it’s the first time? There was one verse not too long ago that did just that for me.

I love how the Bible, even though read over dozens of times, can be brand new today! That’s why we are told that the Word of God is “living and active,” right? So, here is the verse that did this to me. It’s the kind of verse that we so often believe doesn’t apply to us. We might be tempted to skim over it or skip it altogether. It’s easy to do. 

3rd John verse 12: “Everyone speaks highly of Demetrius, as does the truth itself.”

Woah! Did you catch it? I read that and got hit square in the face. John said at first what everyone already knew… “Everyone speaks highly of Demetrius…” They already knew that. If everyone is speaking highly of someone, then his readers have already known that. 

Isn’t this where we usually stop? “Man, everyone speaks highly of (insert name).” John added what matters, though.

I’m not trying to correct Scripture, but he could have said, “Even though everyone speaks highly of Demetrius, that’s not what really matters. Here’s what really matters; the truth itself speaks highly of him as well.” 

“Everyone speaks highly of Demetrius, as does the truth itself.”

So, what does the truth say about me? What does the truth say about you? We often chase what man says, don’t we? What if we were more concerned about what the truth said about us than what man did?
